NFPA 1 Fire Code and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a nonprofit founded in 1896, develops and maintains more than 300 consensus codes and standards addressing fire, electrical, and related hazards. NFPA 1, the Fire Code, provides a comprehensive, integrated approach to fire code regulation and hazard management, incorporating extracts from and references to over 130 NFPA codes and standards including NFPA 101, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, NFPA 54, NFPA 58, and NFPA 30. NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, establishes minimum requirements for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings to protect occupants from fire, smoke, and related hazards based on occupancy type. Both codes are developed through an open consensus process and are broadly adopted and enforced by authorities having jurisdiction throughout the United States.
